Artificial Sugars (such as aspartame, cyclamate and saccharin) and common white sugar, processed with chemicals, are products that offer little nutritional value.
They can pose a health hazard. Hence, many people prefer to replace them with natural alternatives such as stevia, maple syrup, malt, among others, these are called natural sweeteners that can sweeten and, in turn, provide vitamins and minerals to the body.
Why are harmful artificial sugars?
Currently, industrially processed foods and refined white sugar incorporate artificial sugars not only ice cream, cookies and other sweets but also bread, canned food, sauces and more.
This extra sugar in foods can cause, over time, various diseases such as diabetes and obesity and other disorders of varying severity.
In most cases are highly purified and crystallized products that contain only empty calories. Moreover, some of them require, to digest, alkaline minerals like calcium and magnesium obtained from bone which carries the risk of osteoporosis and dental caries to its acidity.
Furthermore, in its processing have been used chemicals that are not yet known exactly how they can intervene and affect our health.
If you do not want to abandon the sweet taste, there are other natural options that are nutritious and, in turn, healthy (always without falling into excesses). Below are some examples of natural sweeteners.
Some natural sweeteners
The raw sugar cane this is naturally extracted from sugar cane (without chemicals or refining) and contains minerals like calcium, iron, phosphorus and vitamins among others such as A, B1, B2, B6, E.
This type of sugar fructose is found in fresh fruit and most vegetables. The fructose is easily digested and provides a ready source of food energy. However, it is recommended to take in large doses, since, according to studies, can increase cholesterol.
Honey Honey is a healthy choice to sweeten, because it contains vitamins, minerals, free amino acids, proteins and aromatic substances. However, compared with sugar contains nearly twice as sweet. Therefore, it is recommended to consume in small quantities.
Maple Syrup This syrup is obtained from the sap of a variety of maple and contains valuable minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium and others that help digestion. Importantly, it provides fewer calories than sugar and honey, and is more easily digested than sugar cane and beet. Its acid pH is not a danger to the tooth enamel.
Stevia is a plant native to Paraguay and although it is sweeter than sugar has little calories and is well tolerated by diabetics because it contains an active ingredient, stevioside, which acts on cells of the pancreas, causing them to secrete insulin which does not significantly affect blood sugar levels.
In addition to this property healing, stevia offers other great health benefits including:
It fights bacteria like candida albicans found in the oral mucosa and vagina.
Improves metabolism in general and even promotes the absorption of fat which facilitates weight loss.
Help regulates the digestive process and heartburn.
Combat, if applied externally, wrinkles and blemishes and promotes rapid healing of the skin.
It regulates the heartbeat and helps lower high blood pressure.
Malts Another alternative for natural sweetening malt are both wheat and rice or barley. They contain many nutrients (proteins and minerals) and enclosing the malting process is natural, since germination is expected to crush the sprouts, fermented in water and then thickened. Thus, part of its carbohydrates are converted into maltose which is composed of glucose. However, it is necessary to develop them, not left with remnants of pesticides.
Dried fruits For thousands of years in the Middle East has dried outdoors or fruit to the sun but now you can also perform this process in the kilns. By removing the liquid, sweet taste is enhanced.
We recommend eating small amounts every day. Some examples of dried fruits include raisins, pineapple, figs, mangoes and blueberries. The latter has even cures, helping to relieve diarrhea and urinary tract infections such as cystitis.
It is desirable to make the drying process at home or purchased from organic shops, as if purchased in traditional ways, may that fruit are loaded with preservatives, sulfur dioxide (E-220) and to contain residues of agricultural pesticides.
