Since ancient times, many physicians as Dioscorides, Avicenna and Galen, praised the healing powers of clay.

However, it was only when the Abbe Sebastian Kneipp widely disseminated its therapeutic properties and, therefore, is considered the true founder of clay therapy.

The clay is derived from the decomposition of certain elements of earth and rocks. Different types of clay as the clay deposit, kaolin or porcelain earth and clay sedimentation and others.

It is famous also the clay that comes from the Dead Sea in Israel, for its high mineral content and active ingredients especially copper and manganese, two trace minerals important for healthy skin.

However, all the clays have properties that are common such as the peculiar smell is characteristic of wet earth when they take a couple of drops of water and soften when wet mass to form a tenacious and capable of adapting the contours where applicable.

Curative

From the standpoint of natural medicine, clay has very important features like these:

Filter and absorb all kinds of toxic substances in body tissue.
Regenerate and heal
Preventing the proliferation of pathogenic microbes or bacteria.
Neutralize nitrogenous waste and eliminate acids.
Remove from water chemical odors.
To act as a deodorant.
Clearing the blood of all organs by stimulating and reactivating its functions, because it keeps the blood pH slightly alkaline.
Heal and disinfect some skin conditions like eczema to festering sores

Its internal and external applications

The clay can be consumed for poisoning cases, eliminate intestinal gas, releasing parasites, etc.. However, not everyone tolerates your intake properly. Therefore it is most commonly used externally (on the skin) by poultices.

Below is a series of remedies which the clay, as an ingredient, plays a role:

Folk Remedies

Remedy for abscess, whitlow and furuncle: Apply cold clay poultices, very thick (two inches) on the affected part, two or three times a day, having to retire after one hour.
Remedy for Acne: Apply a clay mask of an inch on the area affected by acne, two or three times a day. Remove after half an hour.
Cellulite Remedy: Wet, warm water, areas affected by cellulite and massage with the mitt, making circles. Then dry the area and apply the clay, diluted in warm water. After the leg is wrapped in a transparent piece of kitchen paper and allow to react for 15 minutes. Next, remove the soft clay and make a stimulating massage.
Remedy for eczema: Spread over the area concerned a little thick clay plaster and remove when it has dried, the area is sanitized with salt water (sea salt) or water that has been added 4 or 5 drops of lemon juice .
Remedy for sore throat: Apply several cold clay poultices (two inches thick) around the neck a day which must be renewed each time it is heated
Remedy for gout or increased uric acid: Conduct, for about 10 minutes, water foot bath with sea salt clay which was added 5 drops of essential oil of juniper if pain and inflamed areas by the droplet usually are located in the foot.
Remedy for Hemorrhoids: Apply small clay poultices on hemorrhoids cold twice a day. Remove when heated with water.
Remedy for menstrual cramps (pain): Apply two or three days before the presence of the rule, a cold clay poultice on the lower abdomen for an hour and a half daily. Remove the clay with water.
Remedy to relieve psoriasis Extend a clay plaster over the areas affected by psoriasis, twice a day, which, once dry, should be removed with salt water (sea salt) or water and lemon juice.
Remedy for rheumatism: Take a bath every two or three times a week hot clay, 15 to 20 minutes combined with infusion of juniper, lavender, cypress or rosemary.

Recommendations

In order to test for any allergic reaction (although minimal is always possible) is positive, before starting their external application, place in a small area of skin. If any outbreak or rash, should not apply.

Because the sun's active, it is necessary for preservation and storage, keep in a dark bucket. Further, there should never be handled with metal instruments.

Once the clay has been used should be discarded because it has lost its invigorating power.
