Amenorrhea or absence of menstruation
- 2-18-2010

When menstruation ceases for more than 90 days is considered that women suffer from amenorrhea.
It is classified into two:
Primary Amenorrhea: When a woman has never menstruated, though age have to do it (over 16)
Secondary amenorrhea: When the woman has menstruation, but for some reason, is interrupted.
Possible causes of secondary amenorrhea are:
- Physiological: pregnancy and menopause,
- Pathological: Stress (family problems, employment, or a couple), eating disorders (anorexia), general diseases (tuberculosis, anemia, malnutrition), low secretion of sex hormones (gonadotrophic, is the most common) or alterations pituitary (gland at the base of the brain).
These changes have the existence of benign tumors in the pituitary gland that stimulates the overproduction of the hormone prolactin (a condition called prolactinemia) and where the woman first begins to secrete a substance in breast milk (not to be nursing) and then stops menstruation .
